CHORD VARIANTS
"FILTER" Buttons
BASIC
BASIC/BLUES/JAZZ — Curated lists of modifier buttons. Keeps the list from being overwhelming for beginners, while allowing exploration of modifiers commonly used in blues or jazz music when you're ready to go further.
TRIAD
SHELL/TRIADS — A little different than the other filter buttons, these two buttons enable modes that present only 3-note chords: Triads, consisting only of the Root, 3rd, and 5th, and Shells consisting of the Root, 3rd, and 7th (no fifth). These are all easily-playable chord voicings as they are always on 3 adjacent strings and cover no more than 3 total frets for easy reach (4 if one is an open string). If you're ready to handle slightly wider chord voicings, you can enable "wide voicings" in settings.
MODIFIER BUTTONS
5
POWER CHORD. Just the root and fifth — no third, no color. Raw and open-sounding.
sus2
Replaces the third with the 2nd. Suspended, open, unresolved feeling.
sus4
Replaces the third with the 4th. Similar to sus2 but slightly more tense.
7
Adds a dominant 7th — a flatted 7th interval on top of a major triad. Bluesy and tense. The tension it creates naturally wants to resolve.
Maj7
Adds a major 7th — just one half-step below the octave, and brighter than the dominant 7th. Dreamy and sophisticated. Common in jazz and pop.
min7
Adds a flatted 7th to a minor triad — the same interval as a dominant 7th, but built on a minor chord instead. Mellow and soulful.
6
Adds the 6th degree. No 7th. Bright and slightly sweet.
add9
Adds the 9th without a 7th — Simpler than a full 9th chord. Open and colorful.
add11
Adds the 11th without a 7th. Adds an airy, ambiguous quality.
6/9
Combines the 6th and 9th with no 7th. Lush and full-sounding.
9
Dominant 9th. Automatically includes the dominant 7th plus the 9th. Funky and rich.
Maj9
Major 9th. Automatically includes the major 7th plus the 9th. Lush and jazzy.
min9
Minor 9th. Automatically includes the minor 7th plus the 9th. Deep and soulful.
b9
Flat 9th plus dominant 7th. Tense and dark — common in jazz and flamenco.
#9
Sharp 9th plus dominant 7th. The "Hendrix chord" — dissonant and gritty.
11
Adds the 11th on top of a 7th chord. Soft and open.
#11
Raised 11th. Bright and slightly exotic — a Lydian flavor.
13
Adds the 13th on top of a 7th chord. Full and jazzy.
b13
Flat 13th. Dark and tense — common in altered jazz chords.
b5
Replaces the 5th with a flat 5th. Tense and unstable — tritone flavor.
#5
Raises the 5th. Dreamy and unresolved — augmented quality.
